The National Youth Wind Orchestra Of Great Britain is a large concert band with approximately 75 members aged 15-21. This orchestra configuration means that the whole range of  clarinets takes the places of the violins and violas in a symphony orchestra. The result is a wonderfully rich sound which is quite unlike the one to one reedy sound made by smaller ensembles.  NYWO is considered by conductors coming from abroad to one of the very best wind orchestras in the world.

Since 1986, there have been nearly 4,500 young players through its ranks and many are now working in orchestras, ensembles, bands and music related organisations throughout the world.

NYWO has been recorded many times on Radio Three and Classic FM.  There are also DVDs and CDs available for sale at concert venues.

The acclaimed BBC Proms Millenium Day in 2000 was organised by NYWO director Kit Shepherd in conjunction with the BBC.  Seven younger national orchestra and choirs also took part.  The BBC have invited NYWO to play at the Promenade Concerts on August 12th, 2012

NYWO continues to commission new works whenever possible, inviting composers and soloists to work closely with the members of the orchestra on new compositions.

The Main Orchestra meets twice a year at Easter and in the Summer for residential courses lasting 9 days each .  Directed by renowned national and international conductors and accompanied by professional tutors, a full range of concerts are given each year in venues throughout the country and abroad.  Players are aged between 15 and 20 years old and are of Grade VIII and above standard.

THE FOCUS ON CHAMBER MUSIC COURSES

A variety of courses are held for chamber ensembles. These “Focus on Chamber” courses are held at the same time as the main orchestra courses and are led by renowned tutors. The standard required to attend these courses start at Grades IV to VII plus standard.

 

JOINING NYWO

Admission to any of the NYWO courses is usually by audition although not necessary, a recommendation from your teacher is also acceptable.

Auditions are held in the Autumn for entry into the orchestra and other courses the following year.
